Watercolor used to scare me. Maybe scare is the wrong word--intimidate. The challenge of a transparent medium that I couldn't cover up with another coat of paint like acrylic was too much of a challenge to take on in the fleeting moments between work and life.
Then the covid lockdown happened.
Suddenly, I had all the time in the world. All the captive hours inside were filled with tutorials from wherever I could find them. I became obsessed. Then, my manager asked everyone to come up with ideas for team engagement and I suggested we paint. And paint we did. It was fun and several of my teammates suggested we do it every week. So we did.
One by one, they dropped off leaving only the die hards behind and soon they were inviting their friends and family and now, four and a half years later, we still paint together every week.
All of this is to say that watercolor doesn't have to be intimidating or scary. You only need three things--paint, paper, and a brush.
Well, and water.
While you can spend a fair amount on supplies--and if you fall in love with this medium, you will--you can also get by with fairly inexpensive supplies. INt he next couple of posts, I'll share what I've learned about paper, brushes and paints with you but for now, I've linked below my starter materials. Happy Painting!
